What to do at Sipi falls

By Joseph Ogwang 21 Jan 2020

Uganda’s Eastern frontier is covered by extensive plains dotted with extinct volcanoes and isolated mountain ranges. The highest and most extensive of these is the 4000sq km Mount Elgon. The Sipi River plunges in quick succession giving birth to the 3 spectacular water falls.

To emphasize their magnificent beauty, they have been named as the most romantic waterfalls by the guide book – Lonely Planet.

Not only are they eye catching, they also provide a great opportunity for adventure lovers. Some of the great adrenaline filled activities one can indulge in while on a visit to these magnificent waterfalls include: “Rock climbing” and “Abseiling”.  I will briefly give some details about each here.

Rock climbing

For adventure thrilled lovers, this is definitely an activity you must per take off as it guarantees you a great hiking experience on the 3 spectacular waterfalls. Not only do you get the best view of the falls but the adrenaline filled experience you get is simply mind blowing. It’s definitely not an activity for the faint hearted but it’s definitely worth it. Please do not also forget to carry with you a swimming costume as it’s possible to take a deep at some of the pools below the water falls. Rock climbing costs on average 40$ and for the best experience its best to book advance.

Abseiling

Abseilingalso known as rappelling is a controlled descent off a vertical drop, such as a rock face, using a rope. To descend safely, abseilers use a variety of techniques to increase the friction on the rope to the point where it can be controlled comfortably. These techniques range from wrapping the rope around the body, to using a custom built device like arack. For safety its best to choose a technique based on the speed, safety, weight and other circumstantial concerns that you can handle. Abseilers can descend distances ranging from 10m to 100m or more depending on their level of experience and safety. In case you are interested in abseiling, be ready to part with 50$ on average and its best you book the experience in advance (Job Soyekwo does quite a good job).
